The request was for this room to be transformed from the dumping ground to a working study and occasional guest bedroom. My client wanted the new space to feel fun and colourful. The desk area required some hidden storage, some open shelving and as large a desk space we could get in. On the opposite side of the room we also needed to fit in a shelf for an Xbox and Monitor to be mounted on the wall.
I started with some ideas for the shape that the desk would take. As the room was an unusual shape with a corner fireplace, there wasn’t a need to have things symmetrical. I also wanted the desk not to have any sharp corners. By giving the desk a back panel of tongue and groove panelling it felt more like a fitted piece of furniture. I worked closely with the carpenter to get this just right. I also wanted to use plywood for the desk and shelving where we could see the exposed layers. The colours came together from my clients love of pink, so I worked with colours from the Designers Guild range of paints, who have a distinct colour palette. There were lots of sample tester pots used, and even a complete change of direction when another interested party saw that the fireplace wall was a bright pink. The sofa from Loaf adds another texture to the space, in a darker shade of green blue than the desk.
