My client had recently moved back to Guildford from living in France and were very keen to get their new home updated and cleared of clutter. The brief was to make the home ready so that family could come and stay, to do this they wanted to create a guest bedroom in the room currently used as a study. The brief was to add some colour to this 60’s house, which had some wonderful features such as a wood clad ceiling in the Living Room. Along with double aspect picture windows in the study. Challenge accepted.
Refurbishing the parquet in the hallway and retaining the teak clad ceiling in the Living Room were clear instructions for the new design. These features make a statement on their own, so it was important to select finishes surrounding them to be complementary. Replace the Doors and door furniture for all rooms, new carpet for the Study and Stairs with new lighting to all rooms.
The main hallway wallpaper was chosen for its texture, an all over pattern which added depth to the walls, and made more of an impact than paint alone. The mural wallpaper on the stairs was chosen for its autumnal colours and meandering pattern leads your eye up the stairs.
Once the chosen layout had been designed, work started on choosing the colours for the space. In order to allow for storage and a bed we had to utilise as much wall space as possible. The bespoke cabinet needed to house; filing requirements, all IT equipment and enough shelving for all their books. We knew the size of the sofa so work could start on the space surrounding it. The wallpaper from Mulberry added a country feel and can be seen reflected in the mirror. The cabinet was painted in ‘Mockingbird’ from Paint and Paper Library. Lighting was placed above the shelves and also recessed behind the sofa allowing light for different moods.
In the Living Room on the long wall, the paper from Arte has an organic leaf pattern which keeps your eye moving and is not obvious where the pattern begins and ends. This worked with existing furniture for the space. The remaining walls were painted in Inchyra Blue from Farrow and Ball. As this was a dark room, I wanted to keep it cosy with strong colours.
