Having recently moved to this house from a much smaller home, my client wanted guidance in thinking through how best to use the new space. With an entrance from the kitchen, another from the hallway, and doors opening onto the garden, it was important to carefully consider the flow of the room, ensuring that movement felt natural and uninterrupted.
The layout needed to accommodate several functions: a comfortable area for family time and watching television, a quieter spot by the fire for reading, and a practical desk space for work. Balancing these different requirements was central to creating a room that felt both cohesive and easy to live in.
Having decided on a layout, whilst simultaneously scouting for suitable sofa shapes, a full plan was starting to come together. There were specific requirements for how each of them would sit on the sofa. One with legs out stretched and the other with legs tucked underneath. The chaise sofa was perfect for them. The bespoke bookcase, desk, was designed to have open display shelves and lower cupboard storage, with a space in the centre for the desk. This is a free standing piece which was made off site, and installed without any carpentry requirements. We decided the walls didn’t require wallpaper as there was so much beautiful cornice detailing, so we focused on the right paint colours to highlight the cornicing, architraves and skirtings. The armchairs by the fireplace and chandelier were sourced from a local independent design showroom. Whilst the coffee table, and side tables were from Andrew Martin. The cushions on the sofa are from A Rum Fellow and House of Hackney.
