The brief was to make this room warmer so it could be used all year round. This was a space to go and listen to music or read a book in the summer when the doors could be open in the evening. Some of the furniture would be re-used in the new design. The cabinet for the hi fi equipment, the eames chair and some sleek teak shelves which had been passed down through the family.
For the downstairs cloakroom, the brief was to design a room that made a statement. Use lots of colour and pattern and we like green. All elements were to be removed so we had a blank canvas.
In order to make this room viable all year round we planned to insulate the floor and ceiling then replace the single glazed doors with double glazed aluminium doors. To keep in style with the retro furniture we selected a rusty tangerine coloured velvet sofa from Sofas and Stuff. The wallpaper from Arte added texture and warmth to the walls, the radiator and skirtings were painted in the same colour so that the radiator ‘disappeared’ into the walls. Bronze colour light switches and plug sockets added an extra level of detail to the overall feel of the room.
The wallpaper selection was the starting point for the design. The dark green tiles grounded the lower part of the room. We chose to tile half height around the room bar one wall. The counter top behind the sink and hiding the cistern was a piece of scaffold board stained in a dark oak colour. The floor made a statement in a black Amtico LVT which added to the cocooning effect of the room. The ceiling was painted the same colour green as the coving, which was a different colour to the skirting and the architraves. The organic mirror and wall light were selected for their organic shape, to bring a feeling of nature.
