About the project

This was a request to update the family hallway for a potential move in a few years time.  There was a large amount of circulation space with an abundance of doorways.  A bay window had a high backed chesterfield style sofa blocking the view to the stepped garden.  A Hallway is always a challenge as the chosen finishes have to work in more than one area of light.  The real wood floor was staying as part of the refreshed design.

The brief for the Study was to replace and re-position the new desk from the window, keep all the built in storage and re-paint it to co-ordinate with the rest of the space. Select wallpaper to add interest and select window dressings to soften the window.  There was space for extra seating for visitors to the office which could add some pattern and colour.

Step by step project

The search began for wallpaper options, new seating and floor length curtain fabrics for the bay window. This hallway was blessed with the sunshine in the morning, so the bay window was the perfect place for your morning coffee.  We selected two armchairs from Love Your Home, upholstered in a soft blue which have an elegant shape with turned wood legs. The fabric for the curtains was a yellow herringbone pattern which perfectly complemented the hand printed wallpaper from Rapture and Wright, which has a stylised leaf design.  We chose this paper to go in the hallway and up the stairwell wall. The striped carpet from Roger Oates worked well with the wallpaper and Treron from Farrow and Ball on the spindles and further upstairs on the landing walls.

My client wanted to feel calm and focused in the space, so we worked together with blue being a favourite colour. The desk was selected from Oka for its warm natural feel, giving a sense of grandeur with its traditional style. The wallpaper added some interest to the wall behind the desk giving a country house feel with a modern colour palette. The wool, sheer, paisley fabric from Hodsoll McKenzie added an extra touch of luxury to the window. Unlined, it gives shade when required and hangs beautifully to one side of the window.  I sourced the cushion from Tori Murphy on the armchair adding a touch of ‘handmade’ in a beautiful cherry red colour.
