Commercial Interior Design for Collaborate Works, Central Woking

Designing commercial interiors is always about more than aesthetics. It’s about understanding how people work, how a business evolves, and how a space can quietly support both productivity and wellbeing.

I was invited to work with Collaborate Works  a growing provider of private offices and coworking spaces in Woking and Guildford. The project marked an exciting chapter in the company’s journey, one that mirrored their own growth.

Collaborate Works began in Steward House, Woking, establishing a professional yet flexible environment for businesses seeking a more considered alternative to traditional office space. As the company expanded, so too did the scale of the design brief.

Today, Collaborate Works occupies four floors within Export House, Victoria Way, Central Woking, each spanning approximately 12,000 square feet. This progression created a rare opportunity: to shape not just a single office interior, but an entire workplace experience across multiple levels.

Designing for Growth & Function

Commercial interior design requires a careful balance between practicality and atmosphere. Each floor needed to function seamlessly while maintaining a consistent visual identity.

The design direction focused on creating a modern corporate environment — refined, professional, and adaptable — while ensuring the spaces never felt overly rigid or impersonal.

Office interiors today must work harder than ever. They are spaces for:

Layout planning therefore became central to the project, ensuring flow, clarity, and ease of movement throughout each floor.

From private offices and meeting rooms to breakout areas and shared spaces, every element was carefully considered to support the rhythm of the working day, balancing function with comfort and visual cohesion.

Creating Calm Within a Corporate Setting

One of the defining objectives was to introduce a sense of calm something often overlooked in commercial environments.

By incorporating principles of biophilic design, the interiors were shaped to feel welcoming, balanced, and comfortable. Natural materials, considered colour palettes, and planting were used to soften the architectural framework of the building.

A modern workspace that feels balanced.

Biophilic design in commercial interiors is not simply decorative. It plays a measurable role in wellbeing, helping reduce stress, enhance focus, and create spaces people genuinely enjoy spending time in.

The introduction of greenery, natural textures, and layered tones allowed the interiors to feel grounded without compromising professionalism.

The Role of Lighting in Commercial Interiors

Lighting is one of the most transformative tools in workplace design.

In high-density office environments, lighting must support both function and mood. A carefully considered lighting scheme was developed to balance practicality with atmosphere — enhancing focus in task-oriented areas while creating warmth in breakout and collaborative spaces.

Rather than relying solely on overhead lighting, layered illumination was introduced to add depth and visual comfort. The result is a workspace that feels bright yet soft, structured yet inviting.

Good commercial interiors are shaped as much by light as by materials or furniture.

Designing Spaces for Modern Working

Collaborate Works provides office space for a diverse range of businesses, including global organisations such as Capgemini.

This diversity required flexibility within the design, interiors that feel professional, contemporary, and universally appealing, while still maintaining warmth and character.

Modern office design is no longer about uniformity. It is about creating environments that encourage productivity, collaboration, and comfort in equal measure.

Across each floor, the design language remained cohesive, allowing the building to feel unified while accommodating varied working styles.

Final Reflections

Workplace environments have a profound influence on how we think, feel, and perform. Whether designing private offices, coworking spaces, or large-scale commercial interiors in Central Woking, the aim remains constant: to create spaces that feel purposeful, welcoming, and quietly supportive of everyday working life. This project with Collaborate Works stands as a reminder that well-considered commercial interiors can elevate not only a space, but the experience of those within it.
