To help you see how far you’ve come, I find it’s always fun to have a look back.
When I look back to see what the rooms first looked like when I first saw them, without fail, it will bring a sense of achievement.

For example, this living room with amazing architecture and woodwork had more than ‘good bones’ to start with. We were merely adding the final layers to an already beautiful space.

When my clients moved in, they had moved from a considerably smaller home, so were overwhelmed with where to start with a space of this size. Having normally popped to Ikea to select their furniture, they realised that this wasn’t going to work for this room.

The room had potential to serve many functions. Together we decided on what were the key priorities for family life. This was to be a space for:

  • watching TV,
  • relaxing by the fire in armchairs,
  • being able to attend to paperwork,
  • somewhere to store games, books and photographs.

This gave us three key areas:

  • the sofa with coffee table for TV,
  • armchairs and side tables next to the fire,
  • a full-height bookcase with a desk space filling up the back wall.

The room had entrances from both ends of the house, as well as doors to the garden, so being able to move around the space without having to negotiate with furniture was important.

The room still has plenty of space to move around in, whilst fulfilling the three main objectives.
